Walton Stores

Overview

Urban Renewal: Adaptive Reuse + Contemporary Placemaking

Walton Stores is an award‑winning civic precinct and one of Toowoomba’s most significant examples of inner‑city revitalisation. Located in the heart of the CBD, the precinct brings together convenience, community connection and contemporary design through a curated mix of hospitality, retail and commercial tenancies and boutique operators and offices. Walton Stores has become a vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike.

The redevelopment transformed an older CBD block and laneway network (off Ruthven Street), through adaptive reuse and sensitive design, renewing a historically significant part of the city while restoring its cultural and civic relevance. Walton Stores celebrates Toowoomba’s laneway heritage and showcases how existing fabric can be re‑energised into active, people‑focused spaces.

URBAN TRANSFORMATION

A Landmark Precinct of Hospitality Design

Walton Stores has received major awards including the 2017 AIA Regional Project of the Year, the RAIA State Award for Urban Design, and the 2018 UDIA CEO Award for Public Space — recognition of its contribution to the city’s evolving urban identity and its success as an inclusive, pedestrian‑friendly hub.

Aspect led the project from feasibility to completion, delivering integrated services across design, heritage management, planning, quantity surveying, leasing, tendering and construction management. This coordinated approach ensured a commercially sound, design‑driven outcome. Extensive stakeholder engagement shaped the precinct design. The result is a thoughtfully curated network of indoor–outdoor spaces and activated laneways that repurpose the historic heart of Toowoomba and elevate the way people gather, dine and experience their city. Walton Stores now stands as a leading example of adaptive reuse and urban placemaking in regional Queensland.
